How do you compete in college swimming?

The season consists of different types of competitions, often called meets. These can include:
Small competitions between 2–4 schools
Conference Championships, which are the most important competitions of the year

During each meet, swimmers compete in various distances and strokes. Points are awarded based on performance, and schools compete against each other to accumulate the highest total points. Depending on the level of the competition, the points may carry different weights.

The ultimate goal in college swimming is to become a national champion. This can be achieved in two ways:

Individually – swimmers achieve times that qualify them for the national championships
Team competition – schools accumulate points and are invited as a team to the national championships

The result is both individual national champions in each event and a school that wins the National Championship by scoring the most total points.

What level is required for a high scholarship?

Scholarships vary from school to school, but certain factors make you particularly attractive:

If you are versatile and can perform well in multiple distances or strokes, you increase your chances of scoring points in more events.

If you are a specialist in a particular distance or stroke, you should be the best at your school and ideally within your entire conference.

High performance combined with strategic flexibility can help you earn a larger scholarship and greater opportunities in the recruitment process.

When is the college swimming season?
